He was known as one of the Immortal 600. He was an old mountain preacher with fiery words and a charismatic manner that drew people to him. The soldiers of the 5th Kentucky Mounted Infantry called him "Captain" and later, his subordinates in the 10th Kentucky Mounted Infantry called him "Colonel". Some of his enemies called him a "dangerous guerilla chieftain". Very late in the war, his regiment was re-designated as the 13th Kentucky Cavalry. Caudill's Mountain Warriors contains specific details regarding Colonel Ben E. Caudill's 13th Kentucky Cavalry. It includes a complete muster roll of the men who rode with Ben E. They were brothers and now, they are brothers once more. Other monuments honoring others have been placed on Monument Mountain. A teardrop honoring the Indigenous tribes has been set and statues reflecting our diverse history, heritage, and American legacy continues to be set. The monuments are located off US 23 at the Letcher County, KY and Wise County, VA borders. Graveyard and cemetery projects continue along with research and placing gravestones to pay homage to those who have gone before us. The work continues... Read more
