Toshi Sugiyama, a genius CM director who created numerous famous commercials in the 60s and 70s, including many for Shiseido and Mobil Oil's "Nonbiri Ikou yo," and who was at the peak of his career as an industry darling, suddenly chose to take his own life in 1973. This book examines how Sugiyama innovated expression during the era when TV commercials blossomed as a new visual culture. A memorial book in which various talents reflect on Sugiyama, who left behind the words, "I can't depict a world that is happy when it isn't happy."
Soichiro Tahara, Akira Akiyama, Makoto Wada, and Asei Kobayashi are among those who contributed. This is a variety book that considers not only the death of a single talent but also a major turning point in the Japanese economy.
Edited by Keiji Baba and Eiko Ishioka, this book reveals the thoughts and influence of Toshi Sugiyama, etched in the dawn of visual expression.
